McFerrin, Bobby Try This At Home (DVD)
Be the first to review this product
We can't recommend this DVD highly enough! Bobby McFerrin raises audience participation to an art form - a playful, spontaneous, warm and inviting art form. In 43 minutes at the intimate Minneapolis Walker Arts Center in September 1999, he manages to break down the audience's inhibitions and gets them to play with their vocal instrument like joyful kids. He warms them up by doing funny calls and responses - he is a master of "language-like" syllables. First he walks up and down the aisles in his bare feet with his wireless mic, eliciting a wide range of one-on-one musical relationships across a broad but improvised palette. Then he gets each of the cameramen into the act - they have to join in, finishing with the handheld cameraman mirroring McFerrin as he scats his way slowly to the floor, ending the shot horizontally in a burst of glee. While the DVD stands alone as entertainment, educators and performers should have a look. If you need to break down your singers' inhibitions this is an amazing ice-breaker. And if you're a performer looking for fresh ideas to draw in your audience, watch the master at work! True, nobody can sing or improvise like him, but with your imagination fired up by this terrific DVD, you too can "try this at home" ... or on stage! (2001 43 min.)
