Barnwell, Ysaye: Singing in the African American Tradition, Vol. 1 (Book and 4 CDs)
Be the first to review this product
Based on the vocal workshops of Ysaye Barnwell, this four-CD and book set provides a great overview of the myriad of styles making up African American singing traditions. The CDs present chants, spirituals, calls and work songs in an instructional framework. They are presented many times - first alone, then with harmony, then with all parts and bodily rhythmic accompaniment included. She guides the reader/listener through using the tapes and finding insight into not only their singing style, but their interpersonal habits while singing as well. The book is a wonderfully educational description of the history and the human dynamics that go into communal singing.
