This is a very interesting setting of this traditional spiritual. It begins innocently enough, with a straight, four-part pronunciation of the main theme. Sopranos, tenors and basses take turns on the melody, with the altos providing internal counterpoint. Towards the end, the time signature swings back and forth between 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4, and with some ambiguity in the rhythmic eighth note patterns, it leaves you guessing just which one you're in at some points. Altos DO get the melody at the end. Ranges are stretched a little for both sopranos and basses, something to consider when dealing with high school singers.
