King's Singers, The: America (CD)
Be the first to review this product
True to the title, this album takes popular American songs from the '60's and '70's and transforms them into orchestral gems in their own right. With the English Chamber Orchestra, the king'singers pay tribute to greats of that era like Paul Simon ("Bridge Over Troubled Water," "The Sound of Silence," "America," "Homeword Bound"), Randy Newman ("Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear," "It's Lonely at the Top), and Peter Cetera ("If You Leave Me Now"). While the melodies and basics of the songs stay the same, these arrangements are definitely intended to stand on their own. The dark twist given to "The Sound of Silence" draws from the lyrics to create a nightmarish feel. Flutes, harp glissandos and dancing bassoons give "Simon Smith..." a playful air. And as always, the King's Singers lend their distinguished voices and undeniable touch of class.
