The King's Singers serve up a healthy dose of Spanish bravado with this collection of 15th and 16th Century "ensaladas" and "quodlibets" - mixtures of musical styles made popular during the time by composers such as Mateo Flecher the Elder. Often dramatic, always allegorical, these sometimes-lengthy choral pieces with light instrumental accompaniment (in this case, harp, guitar and drums) served as a sort of comic relief for serious, courtly music. The songs are all in Spanish, often utilizing vocal impressions of instruments, as in "La Bomba," where they imitate an out-of-tune guitar. The long pieces by Flecha are interspersed with shorter, more traditional tunes filled with beautiful melodies, imitative polyphony, and perfectly tuned chords. Mostly a cappella, some accompaniment.
