King's Singers, The: My Spirit Sang All Day

What better way to feature the beautiful and agile voices of the King's Singers than in a collection of English partsongs from the turn of the century? With every line of counterpoint and every completely tuned chord, the group displays their mastery of yet another musical style. The agility of the group is showcased in both the spritely "Quick! We Have But a Second" and in a darker, more insistent "Bring Us Good Ale" by Holst, where meters and tonalities change from verse to verse. Lord Byron's lovely text in "Deep in My Soul" is set skillfully by Elgar to reflect the speaker's anguish, with dynamic swells and staccato "tremblings." A wonderful line-up of pieces, even more wonderfully performed by one of the 20th Century's premiere vocal ensembles. (55:48 1988)
