What an interesting album! There seem to be two distinctive musical styles here, and the King's Singers do them both well (no surprise there). One is the more traditional, Western , contrapuntal sound of Hebreo and Sweelinck; the other is the haunting, Eastern sound of the pieces by Ali Ufki and Claude Goudimel. With a reed flute that sounds like a combination of flute and human voice, and gorgeous string work on bowed fiddle and zither by Sarband, you will be transported to some far Eastern land, redolent with the scents of the desert. The King's Singers voices blend surprisingly well with this relatively out-of-character (for them) accompaniment, to create an album that will sustain your interest and tug on your heart strings (no pun intended) at the same time.
