When Peter the Great moved Russia's capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg to be closer to Western influences, he also imported some Italian composers to Westernize the Orthodox music - all of which is a cappella, since no instruments other than bells are allowed in the church. This serious, and seriously beautiful, recording gathers together Orthodox music from Peter the Great's day, ranging from those Italians he brought in (Sarti's "Now the Powers of Heaven," Galuppi's "In the Flesh Thou Didst Fall Asleep") to the dominant native composer, Dmitry Bortniansky ("The Cherubic Hymn" and many others) who was trained by Galuppi even as a boy chorister. In these sacred choral concerto's you can hear East meeting West, with one or the other holding dominance depending on the piece. The fabulous Estonian choir does more than justice to these great works under the direction of American Paul Hillier. (70:14 2003)
