Toby Twining turned heads a decade ago with his (long out of print CD) "Shaman." So we looked forward to this major work, an hour-long a cappella requiem. The piece is even more avant-garde than his earlier efforts, eschewing tonality for texture and mood for long periods. His overtone singing is much more present, providing a surreal color through much of the music, and he yodels a bit in the "Kyrie." The continual press of dissonance, and his periodic bursts of wide tone clusters, make the piece beyond the palates of all but the most adventurous of listeners. But if you're in the mood for a trip to an alternative a cappella universe, here's your rocket ship! (62:51 2002)
