Anonymous 4: A Star In The East

THIS INDIVIDUAL CD HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED, BUT IS STILL AVAILABLE ONLY AS PART OF THE 4-CD SET: "NOEL - CAROLS & CHANTS FOR CHRISTMAS"
Listeners continue to be spoiled by the extremely high quality of the singing and scholarship of Anonymous 4, a group dedicated to chant without the hype. The subtitle of this recording is "Medieval Hungarian Christmas Music," as it focuses on rarely performed chant and polyphony from this oft-overrun European country. Only a few musical manuscripts survived the sixteenth century Turkish conquest, but the group here re-assembles a beautiful collection of songs that graced medieval Magyar churches during this sacred season. Scholars will undoubtedly appreciate the musical mannerisms and unique texts (translated into English, French, German and Spanish) found in these rare pieces. The rest of us can enjoy the peaceful simplicity of these performances, a balm for holiday stress. (68:20 1996)
