Shaw, Robert Festival Singers: Rachmaninoff Vespers

Robert Shaw was certainly one of the finest choral conductors ever. And the Festival Singers are unique - a summertime convocation of professionals, teachers and conductors in Quercy, France devoted to furthering choral art. We like to get recommendations from customers as well as provide them. This one was suggested as "the best a cappella choral recording of all time." After a few serious listens, we've come around to believing that, if it's not the best, it's certainly one of the greatest! The Rachmaninoff Vespers, written in 1915, stands at the pinnacle of the vast, rich history of Russian Orthodox church music. So if you appreciate the power, the subtle artistry of great choral music (as in"Christ Is Risen From The Grave"), you'll love this recording. It's breathtaking. (65:57 1990)

"Rachmaninoff was inspired to orchestrate the Russian Orthodox church's "all night vigil prayers" and the combination of the gifted Robert Shaw with his Festival Singers, brings to all, the most exquisite and rich offering of harmony of the human voice that I have ever heard. A Must Have!"
