The story behind this music is amazing, the subject of a 1997 movie starring Glenn Close. About 600 Australian, British and Dutch women and children were held captive by the Japanese during World War II on the island of Sumatra. To keep themselves going in the face of extreme hardship, two British women created a vocal orchestra, arranging for treble voices classical works they had once played on piano. Here, then, are emotion-laden performances of Dvorak's "Largo" from the "New World" Symphony; Beethoven's "Minuet in G," "Auld Lang Syne," Ravel's "Bolero" and others (17 in all). The choir singing on the CD is based in The Netherlands, and had begun singing the vocal orchestra arrangements in 1990. Another well-deserved CARA Best Album nominee! (48:47 1997)
