Chanticleer: Lost In The Stars
Be the first to review this product
As the liner notes say, this recording is "a real departure for Chanticleer." It includes several luscious a cappella jazz arrangements by Gene Puerling and Robert Freedman. The title song is a Maxwell Anderson/Kurt Weill spiritual, which Puerling takes from a traditional spiritual treatment to a complex jazz close. Puerling's version of "In the Cool, Cool Cool of the Evening" (by Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael) is unlike any we've heard by the ballad master: it has upbeat tempo sections! There's also "Lost In The Stars," and an a cappella jazz beauty "I Can Dream, Can't I?" So what's the departure? The other 10 songs are accompanied by the London Studio Orchestra, and are reminiscent of King's Singers easy listening efforts, on Cole Porter classics "It's De-Lovely" and "Night and Day," and other great standards. (63:59 1996)
