World premiere recordings of these choral pieces! More than half of them werecommissioned by Chanticleer. John Tavener's "Village Wedding" fuses a 20thCentury Greek poem with the Orthodox marriage ceremony. Steven Stucky created"Cradle Songs" using lullabies from Brazil, Poland and Tobago as launchingpads for hypnotically modern harmonies. There are seven brief songs byPulitzer Prize winner Bernard Rands, whose sharply dissonant, thicklyharmonic music is the setting for poems from James Joyce's "Chamber Music."Rands' wife, Augusta Read Thomas, contributes six songs, five of which areepigrams about love used to launch aural experimentation. As always,Chanticleer's performance is exquisite, all the more impressive given theextremely challenging material presented here. (64:07 1999)
