It's a real pleasure to hear the legendary Shaw apply his directorial genius against such a fine, mostly a cappella repertoire. This recording begins with Britten's "Hymn to St. Cecelia, Op. 27." He follows with an impeccable performance of Debussy's only published a cappella chorus work, "Trois Chansons," then Ravel's only unaccompanied choral pieces, another "Trois Chansons" (French for 'three songs'). Poulenc wrote a number of a cappella works; "Un soir de neige" ('A Snowy Evening') was written during German occupation of France. On "Trois chansons bretonnes," Dutch composer Henk Badings uses a piano and dense vocal textures to paint aural images in lovely harmonic brushstrokes. The recording concludes with a piece commissioned by the Dale Warland singers, the seven-song cycle "I Hate and I Love."
