The liner notes of this recording, which celebrates the works of Eric Whitacre, offer a great deal of information. First, about the young composer, a child of the 70's whose life path didn't seem to be leading in this direction, but who found himself a full-time professional composer at the age of 25. Who, at the age of 35, was sufficiently respected to merit this tribute album (and many other accolades). Second, the liner notes discuss the philosophy, style and motivation behind Whitacre's works. And last, there is discussion of the pieces chosen for this disc.

The performing group, Polyphony, was formed in Cambridge (England) 20 years ago, and has become a staple of the London music calendar. They've built "an extensive discography," often appearing as record of the month for top classical music magazines. Their director, Stephen Layton, is awarded similar praises. In short, this is a wonderful recording that those unfamiliar with Mr. Whitacre's work must hear, and those already smitten, must have. (1:10:48 2006)
