This is the first of the three CD's the Warland Singers planned to release after Conductor Warland's recent retirement. In keeping with the group's love for contemporary American works, this recording features five modern American composers: Barber, Ives, Avshalomov, Finney and Fine. This recording of Avshalomov's "Tom o'Bedlam," from a text about a 17th century Bedlam inmate released to roam the country as a beggar, effectively conveys the nonsense and madness of the piece. It is accompanied by oboe and percussion. The CD's title work, Barber's "Reincarnations," includes a gorgeous rendering of "The Coolin (The Fair Haried One)." It would be impossible to select a favorite from this recording because each track is outstanding. (58:07 2004)
