The Dale Warland Singers, though recently disbanded as a result of Mr. Warland's retirement in 2005, are considered to be one of the best a cappella choirs in the world. This, their first live recording, only secures this standing! The performance, given on February 1, 2003, was dedicated to the families and loved ones of the seven astronauts killed in the shuttle Columbia tragedy of that date. The Vespers, based upon the Russian Orthodox service to honor the beauty of the setting sun, to contemplate the coming day and to dwell upon the significance of eternal light, serves as an appropriate response to the events of that day. There is some debate among lovers of classical a cappella music whether this recording, or that of the Robert Shaw Choir's recording (our product #6228C) is the better, but that hardly matters.
