Lovingly compiled by Jackson and Almeda Berkey (who themselves met during a Luboff workshop and performed with him for years), performed by their top-notch vocal ensemble, this album is a tribute to one of the 20th century's greatest choral music artists. It encompasses the myriad of styles Luboff entertained us with - folk songs like the opening flourishes of "Canto de Granada" and "Colorado Trail" featuring the men, and "Shenandoah", given a bluesy feel by Jackson Berkey's piano accompaniment; popular songs like "Catch a Falling Star" with a latin-lounge feel, "Dream" with a smooth jazz sound, originals "Sence You Went Away" and "Show Me the Way"; gospel songs given new life, like "Old Time Religion" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee", given a slow, shuffling treatment with a great soulful solo. Spirituals are here too, with the Luboff classic "Steal Away", and "Joshua", accompanied with just tom-toms. The album closes with a slow jazzy treatment of "When the Saints Go Marching In." A wonderful tribute and an enjoyable album. (60:11 2002)
