This 1997 recording chronicles the St. Olaf Choir's trip to the Southern Hemisphere (New Zealand and Australia). The group moves easily from the western, traditional sounds of "Nun Dunket Alle Gott" (Purcell) to indigenous African ("Siyahamba") and Aboriginal ("Past Life Memories") evocations. Standouts include "Kasar mie la Gaji"("The earth is tired!"), which uses wonderful variations in texture and tempo and vocal inflections to portray the image of despair and exhaustion inherent in the title, and "City Called Heaven", a traditional spiritual with piano accompaniment.
