Gloriae Dei Cantores: Appalachian Sketches (CD)
Be the first to review this product
An aural portrait of the original Appalachian settlers, painted using tunes and hymns they themselves used to sing and play. "Simple, yet beautiful" characterizes many of these ("Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal," "Bright Canaan," "Begin My Soul"), in songs used for worship and entertainment ("Holy Manna," "Lorena"). World-renowned fiddler Mark O'Connor contributes his first choral composition in "Let Us Move," a lovely haunting collaboration between fiddle and choir. Eight of the arrangements are by Alice Parker, from her "Eight American Mountain Hymns" collection. (60:36 2001)
