"Yuletide Fires" is an appropriate metaphor to describe the warm sound of this Canadian male chorus. They open with a simple Gregorian chant ("Hodie Christus Natus Est") and ably span centuries of Christmas music hence. The CD mixes things up just enough to keep it interesting - familiar tunes ("God Rest You Merry," "Stille Nacht," "Rise Up Shepherd") with lesser-know pieces (the title track, "Dostoyno Yest" by Golovanaov). They also throw in some lightly accompanied pieces - harp on "Le sommeil de l'enfant Jésus," simple organ on "Nouvelle agréable!" This is one of those rare CDs that rewards close listening, but also serves fabulously as background music… to wrapping presents, spending family time together, or drinking nog by a Yuletide fire.
