Recorded on: Brigham Young University Singers: Eric Whitacre - Complete A Cappella Works

A challenging piece for your advanced choir, this 2001 piece was originally based on Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening," but due to legalities and red tape (read the story in the forward by the arranger), became something different. Using Charles Silvestri's poetry, Whitacre paints the landscape of sleep beautifully in eight parts. Lots of extended phrases, legato singing and dynamic expression.

"My chamber choir at Walt Whitman High School has been the highlight of all my musical experiences combined. My senior year we performed "Sleep." My entire choir was very enthusiastic about the piece, and many would call it our signature piece of the year. The first time we heard a recording of it we all loved it on the spot. My choir director, Jeffery Davidson, took this master composition and made it a reality for 55 talented students. We performed it in Orlando recieving superior scoring, including a 99 out of 100, which is almost unheard of. "Sleep" has changed my life personally and as a musician with its challenging, powerful, moving, soul stirring chords. My most sincere thanks to Eric Whittacre for creating such an amazing choral masterpiece."

The most memorable moment of my life!

"This has become my all time favorite choral piece. I performed this 2 months ago at the GMEA All-State Chorus under the direction of Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe! I had so much fun singing this piece and "putting it all out there" as my director from home says. I recommend it to anyone who is brave enough to try and do justice to this piece! It's genius!"

"Yeah I enjoyed the songs we have done this year and all the years I have been in choir. But this song is like none other. Our concert was just a few hours ago and getting the chance to perform this piece was overwhelming. It is possibly one of the greatest most beautiful songs I have heard and will ever hear in my life."
