This 1998 compilation from The Cambridge Singers and Collegium Records brings togethertwo of Rutter's most well-know choral works - his "Requiem" and"Magnificat." As with most of his compositions, Rutter borrowsfrom the old and makes it new, using traditional liturgical textalong with poetry and excerpts from unexpected places to fleshout his own musical ideas. The "Requiem" is the moresolemn of the two works presented here, although Rutter managesto infuse joy in that somber musical form with his hauntinglybeautiful melodies ("Pie Jesu," and "Lux aeterna" especially). The"Magnificat," which celebrates the Virgin Mary and her uniquecalling and virtue is a joyous, celebratory fête, with soaringthemes that recur throughout. The lovely old English poem"Of a rose, a lovely Rose" is added to strengthen the Mary connection;"Et misericordia" will leave you humming the beautiful, liltingmelody for hours afterward.
