Cambridge Singers, The: Collection

This 1993 compilation from Collegium Records is a great way to sample the artistic breadth and versatility of the Cambridge Singers. It includes songs from eight of their recordings, ranging from sacred to secular, serious to sublime, including many of John Rutter's original compositions. The King's Singers join the Cambridge Singers and the City of London Sinfonia on a selection from Rutter's "The Wind in the Willows." Flute and harpsichord are featured in "Waltz," but the rest is all 'a cappella' on this 19-track disc. Six of the songs are by Rutter himself, although the list of composers represented includes other greats like Debussy ("Trois Chansons de Charles d'Orleans"), Taverner ("Christe Jesu, pastor bone"), and Verdi ("Laudi alla Vergine Maria"). For old and new fans of this premiere vocal ensemble, this one is a treasure.
