Mass of the Children is John Rutter's first major work in over ten years, debuting at Carnegie Hall in February 2003. Rutter says he wrote this partly to repay a debt, to give young singers the chance to sing with adult professionals as he did as a boy soprano. He has made a major contribution to the choral singers repertoire with this piece. The work opens with the children's choirs singing the joyful words of Thomas Ken; the text of the mass is standard Latin with several poems added, including one by William Blake. Besides the mass, there are eight more pieces written since the mid-1990s. All but the last two tracks are accompanied. The Cambridge Singers, Canate Youth Choir and City of London Sinfonia are all in top form as one might expect being conducted by the composer himself. Mr Rutter has definitely paid his debt (with interest). This CD if a wonderful gift to all lovers of choral music. (79:00 2003)
