Through the vehicle of vocal music, Kantorei has lifted 16 songs from its 1998 and 1999 Christmas concerts, to take us on a journey revealing much of the diversity of Christmas music. The CD begins with three Appalachian tunes, (accompanied by hammered dulcimer), including "Rise Up Shepherd," which was first published in 1867 as a slave song; moves to medieval poetry set to music by modern composers; and thence to Alfred Burts modern carols. Traditional carols are included with "O Little Town of Bethlehem" set to a tune less familiar than we are used to, and a truly joyous "Ding Dong! Merrily on High." The CD's liner notes are loaded with information about the pieces, as well as musical and religious history. The group's goal with this CD is to engulf us "in all the myriad sentiments of Christmastime: peaceful and still, merry and radiant..." I'd say they've achieved their goal!
