What a find! Denver ensemble Kantorei is simply astounding in their virtuosity and versatility in this loosely-themed recording. Opening with René Clausen's simply beautiful "Tonight Eternity Alone," their warm sound engulfs the listener with pleasing contemporary harmonies. They just as easily master dissonance and raw emotion, as in Ginastera's "Lamentations of Jeremiah," moving from screams of despair to wails of sorrow and remembrance. In stark contrast to the disturbing dissonance of Ginastera's pieces are Lundvik's quietly haunting "Three Nocturnes" which use harmony based on intervals of fourths. This may sound very Asian to our Western ears, but the music is actually very Scandinavian in origin.
