Though Kantorei generally focuses on lesser-known European 19th and 20th century choral works, this CD is composed of 21 spirituals and folk songs. The liner notes define "spirituals" as melodies shaped by African slaves as they assimilated Christianity...(and) express the hopes, dreams and frustrations of slavery and this life. Meanings in these songs are often double. For example, songs about freedom are expressions of yearnings for freedom from slavery as well as freedom from the bonds of life. Spirituals, such as "Dere's No Hidin' Place" warn against the dangers of trying to escape slavery, as well as the wages of sin. Other spirituals are simply songs of praise. On this CD,"I Can Tell the World" is an exciting example of such a song. Among the folk songs on this CD is a performance of "Shenandoah." If this doesn't move you, I'll eat my hiking boots! All the songs on this CD have survived for decades; performances such as those on this recording will ensure their persistence for many decades to come. (66:36 2003)
