Recorded by the Norwegian women's chorus in 1998, these songs indeed are a contrast of modern "serious" music and lighter fare. The two Javier Busto compositions that open the CD, "Salve Regina" and "Magnificat" are thoroughly modern yet embracing the traditions of early music, with simmering, lush dissonances alternating with plainchant - all gloriously executed by a chorus sounding as one voice. Fabulous! Mid-CD there's a fabulous contribution by Ward Swingle, "Reeds of Innocence" based on words by William Blake. Then they get truly jazzy - "Embraceable You," "I Got Rhythm" and more - beginning a cappella but picking up a jazz trio for "Takin' A Chance On Love" and several others (four of 16 tracks are accompanied). If you love women's choruses and diverse repertoire, you'll love this CD! (67:34 1998)
