This fabulous Norwegian women's small chorus was established in 1989 by its present conductor, Maria Gamborg Helbekkmo. The choir consists of about 25 female singers, most of whom are students at Bergen University College or the University of Bergen. This recording from the 2002-2003 season features a suite of piano-accompanied "Songs for Children" by Edvard Greig, which comprise the first seven tracks - simply lovely, warm, musical purity. "Bruremarsj" is a wordless ditty, rhythmically percussion-accompanied. The lusciously simple a cappella starts on track nine with "Bendik og Arolilja," a soaring Norwegian medieval ballad. Along the way there's a wordless "Gavotte," two gorgeous pieces with soprano solo, "Vaaren" and "Solveigs Sang" (the latter a Henrik Ibsen poem), and concluding with a very modern work in English by Kathleen Raine, "Shells, Op. 70 A." We cannot recommend this highly enough to lovers of the classical treble choral sound! (59:21 2003)
