This collection of choral pieces are actual Inuit "songs" translated by renowned explorer and ethnographer Knud Rasmussen in the early 1900s. Richardson was moved to put them to music for the small chorus he sings with, The Quasimodal Chorus, based in Maine. The nine poems deal with different aspects of life among the Inuit more than a hundred years ago. In style, Richardson tries to convey the feeling of vast space, extreme cold, and the very harsh environment in his choice of harmonies. He also chose to connect the individual pieces with some short dialog between an Inuit native and a visitor from away, the "Kabloona," that serves to further describe the various aspects of life.
The pieces are unaccompanied and are generally for standard four-part harmony. One piece, "Woman's Song," is written for four part women's voices and another, "The Old Man's Song," for three-part men's voices with a bass soloist.
