"In an attempt to develop a musical style of their own, East-European or Hasydic Jews during the 17th and 18th centuries, composed wordless hymns called "Niggunim." It was believed that these spontaneously conceived 'prayers', often danced as well as sung, would provide a more appropriate and direct vehicle for approaching God's majesty than rigidly set hymns. At first "Niggunum" were improvised, then repeated in unison by a chorus of men. Later, cantors incorporated these songs into the liturgy and Western musical ideas crept into the style." - From the sheet music inside cover.
This is one of those "Niggunum" songs, with a text consisting entirely of syllables like "bim, bam, and yai" that provides a wonderful example of this rich harmonic tradition.
