"The Latin refrain of 'Gaudete' is taken from the famous 1582 Scandinavian manuscript, Piae Cantiones. Translated, the Latin phrase means simply: "Rejoice! Christ is born of the Virgin Mary." The verse with English text by the arranger, is set to one of the several melodies associated with the original Latin words. The piece has been set up to be easily learned yet to produce a rich and exotic sound, so that even an inexperience choir can have the pleasure of creating a Medieval Christmas fantasy. It is possible to mix and match the different voices in a variety of ways, so that without learning a lot of music, contrasts can be created in timbre and texture."
