From the sheet music's back cover:
"Sweeter Than the King's Wine" is a little thank-you written after a soul-cookin' stay with the choir of St. Thaddeus, Chattanooga, Tennessee. I set my text to a half-foggy, half-clear and have yet to identify. Even Bob Chilcott couldn't place it, and that's saying something.
The piece wishes to mix the light, dancing textures of the madrigal with the kind of soulful singing I heard at St. Thad's - straight from the hip, and straight from the heart. Dynamics should be intimate and scaled down, in keeping with the madrigal style, with a vocal aproach that is flexible and buoyant; but at the same time I want an earthy commitment in the singing that has as much to do with Sacred Harp and the "shapenote" tradition as Now is the Month of Maying.
