"Foggy Birthday Shuffle was written for young singers, and can be learned very quickly. It has two scat verses set to different melodies, one low, one high. The piece then superimposes the verses, encouraging the singers to perform in two parts without anybody needing to learn a "harmony." There is a straight ahead, rocking, bluesy chorus that can be learned, literally, in two minutes. The piano part is a driving, buoyant shuffle that helps the piece keep a swagger in the beat. The song is not meant to be "cute" and, in fact, could be performed by older children without patronizing them. The title refers to my thirty-ninth birthday, when I was far from home, walking through the sea mist, and feeling better and better about being in my own company."
