"I've built this piece around a traditional refrain, the same refrain from which the superb vocal group Sweet Honey in the Rock took its name. My text links two images from the Bible that call and answer each other across the divide between the Old and New Testament: the water that gushed from bare rock when moses struck it with his staff, and the blood and water that gushed from Christ's side (the 'rock of ages') when the soldier pierced him with his spear."
