Commissions for choral music typically come from colleges and universities, from churches and from community choruses. Rarely does a high school undertake such a project. Full marks are due to the Lawrence High School A Cappella Choir in Lawrence, Kansas for commissioning and giving the première performance of According to Thy Wisdom.

Composer Daniel E. Gawthrop selected a text from the oral traditions of Gaelic Christianity as collected and translated by scholar Alexander Carmichael, and set it for four part a cappella chorus (with occasional divisi).
