Shantey: Daniel Gawthrop (SATB)

Dorothy Parker, author of the text of this piece, must have had a love-hate relationship with the sea. Her wryly amusing poem begins enthusiastically enough with praises for, "a wet sheet and a straining sail and a sea of shifting blue," but the verse ends, "Oh, go and sail the green sea, the keen sea, the mean sea; But if it's all the same to you, I'll stick around at home." Sure to be a crowd pleaser. Moderate difficulty; minimal divisi. A great workout for delivery of consonants because the pace is quick and intelligibility is everything. Commissioned for a première performance at the 2000 North Central Division convention of the American Choral Directors Association.
Suitable for: concert Difficulty: moderately difficult
