Celtic scholar Alexander Carmichael wandered the islands of Scotland collecting examples of the oral traditions of the people and translated them into poetic English. His six volume Carmina Gaedelica is a wealth of such prayers. Composer Daniel E. Gawthrop has selected three from among the many wonderful texts in this treasure trove and set them for a cappella chorus. This set of three pieces was written for and premièred by the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants under the direction of Dr. Craig Jessop, who is currently the Director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The three pieces included are: "Morning Prayer," "The Lightener of the Stars," and "God Be With Us."
Suitability: concert or worship Difficulty: difficult
