Amasong Laulu Voim: The Power of Song
Be the first to review this product
Amasong's third CD continues in their tradition of celebrating folk songs from all over the world. This open, inclusive women's chorus includes musical professionals, seasoned amateurs and beginners alike. Their repertoire is "distinguished by its persistent inclusion of music composed by women, love songs to women, musical settings of women's words and other music that gives voice to the experiences of women."*
On this album there's traditional Brazilian music ("O Xote Das Meninas" in Portugese, accompanied by percussion, accordion and guitar), beautiful, haunting Chinese love song "Kangding Qing Ge" featuring the erhu (a traditional violin-like Chinese instrument), as well as a set of three lovely Estonian songs. They also dabble in Scottish work songs in "A Waulking Trilogy," a typical sampling of songs that would accompany that long-lost wool-working trade (some of these are lightly accompanied by piano) and Scottish 'mouth music' ("Puirt a Beul" sung all in Gaelic). There are Finnish folk songs, a mournful and somewhat dissonant tribute to partners passed in Kristina Boerger's "Song from Cymbeline" and "Ballade with Christine De Pisan," and Quaker standard "How Can I Keep From Singing," given a lovely treatment by this treble ensemble. It would be impossible to effectively describe every one of the 21 tracks here, so we'll let the sound files speak for themselves. If you like the sound of female voices, and are into some non-mainstream, world folk music, then this is one for your collection. (68:36 2003) *Taken from the album's liner notes.
