This African-American women's ensemble has created their own path in the music world for over 25 years. In the early years the group recorded for the Flying Fish label, with six releases of their unique contribution to contemporary a cappella. This 1997 compilation (we call it "best of…" even if they don't) has a generous 34 songs on two CDs from these six plus a 1978 Redwood Records disk and including two previously unreleased tracks. The power and passion of the singers is almost overwhelming in this collection. The rage against injustice fuels an emotional intensity with few parallels in a cappella, or any other style of music. Sweet Honey balances improvisation with planned arranging, so the songs oscillate between spontaneously interwoven voices and powerful waves of vocal harmony.
