Debrecen Kodaly Chorus: Kodaly Works for Mixed Choir, Vol. 1 (CD)
Be the first to review this product
Zoltán Kodály is perhaps the best-known Hungarian choral musician because of the pedagogy he developed (the "Kodály Method"), but he was also a prolific composer. This CD is as authentic a representation as one can get of his compositions for mixed choirs, performed as it is by a choir named after him which is conducted by Peter Erdei, who is director-general of the Zoltán Kodály Music Pedagogical Institute. (reviewers note: I had the privilege of Mr. Erdei's teaching when I was a boy and he was a young man). The compositions included on this CD, meant to be the first in a definitive series, mostly represent Kodály's efforts during the 1930s, and almost all are performed in Hungarian. The opener is an exception: "Miserere" was written in 1903, in Latin, as a work for double choir. Several of the works are extended, the longest being "Mátra Pictures" (11:25) which is his largest a cappella folk song arrangement. There is a passion that infuses all of Kodály's choral pieces and you cannot help but feel the fire that burned within the man in these exquisitely nuanced performances. (69:45 2005) Song List: (English Translations) Miserere Evening See the Gypsies Munching Cheese A Christmas Carol A Birthday Greeting Mátra Pictures The Aged Too Late Jesus and the Traders Horatii Carmen II. 10 Transylvanian Lament Annie Miller Ode to Liszt Song of Faith
