This CD is the second recording by the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York of liturgical music composed by Tchaikovsky. (The first, Vespers & Three Sacred Choruses, is available from A-Cappella.com). The Chorus, recognized by the New York Times for the "suppleness and otherworldliness" of its voice, is a wonderful fit for this composition. In 1891, those disapproving of Tchaikovsky's foray into sacred music, suggested he should "stick with polkas, waltzes and operas." How fortunate we are that the composer did not, and that this Chorus elected to celebrate it. (59:22 2001)
