What do Grace Slick and Palestrina have in common besides being dead composers? Answer: The San Francisco Bay area group "Flying Without Instruments." Yes, a piece from each of these musical greats is covered on FWI's first CD. This is a group having fun - their enthusiasm glows like the heat lamp in a fast food joint! Living up to their billing as "diverse," FWI supports soloist Beth Crocker in outrageously declaring her taste in men in "Big & Stupid." In contrast, led by soloist Greg Tinfow, the group closes the CD with a gorgeous Bob Chilcott-arranged, "MLK." On their more percussive pieces (and in some of their repertoire choices), one can hear the influence of The Bobs, but a listen to the entire CD is proof that their influences are varied and many. Born in 1996 as a quartet, FWI is currently an ensemble of eight. We can only hope that the group continues to evolve and will bring us another CD reflecting their intriguing mix and very evident love of entertaining. (29:17 2003)
