This 2005 release represents a combination of two seemingly very different musical styles and ensembles - Isicathamiya vocalization and chamber orchestra. But arranger Isak Roux rose to the task, and the result is a beautiful album that incorporates the best of both worlds. In Roux's own words:

"From the outset it was clear that the project would be a challenge, not only in terms of logistics, but also due to the tensions between African, folkloristic freedoms and European classical constraints. I was determined not to tamper with the typical vocal sound of the ensemble, with the orchestra playing a subtle role in the combined sonic tapestry. Since we were working with a chamber-sized orchestra, it proved possible to avoid the pitfall of an overwhelming and romanticised instrumentation. The arrangements were inspired by the early classical and baroque masters."

The song selection includes some Ladysmith favorites (like "Jabulani-Rejoice" and their well-known hit "Homeless") juxtaposed with classical and folk tunes (such as the beautiful Paul Simon/Joseph Shabalala version of "Amazing Grace," a calypso "Dona Nobis Pacem" and an achingly sweet "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" that features the chamber ensemble with backing vocals by LBM.). This is a surprising and wonderful album that invites you to bask in the sheer artistry of two world-renowned ensembles. (47:24 2005)
