The tradition of Bulgarian women's choruses is a long and proud one, and the marvelous, powerful performances on this CD do it justice. The venue is resonant, allowing the bright and dissonant chords to echo in ethereal splendor. But the sense of space is the only indication that this is a live album. The audience is edited out of the picture, and the performances are flawless - indeed, they at times overwhelm with their power. They open with perhaps the most familiar tune from the repertoire, "Todora's Dream." The 22 tracks span the range of emotions and themes of Bulgarian music, from rhythmic spirited "Kalugerine (The Monk)" to ethereal "Tin Vjater Vee (The Wind Is Blowing)", one of the few non-a cappella pieces (a flute accompanies this haunting piece with its eastern modality).
