Vox One: Pure Imagination (CD)

It took eight years, but the cosmic forces that tore the group apart in 1997, the week after their album "Chameleon" was released, brought them back together in 2005. Fans of Vox One will rejoice that the group has aged like a fine Bordeaux, with more layers of subtlety than even their fine earlier performances. Opener "Pure Imagination" is vintage Vox One, another gem of an arrangement by Yumiko Matsuoka given a shimmer by the wonderful lead vocals of Jodi Jenkins Ainsworth. Stunning "Woodstock" follows in that heritage, with Tom Baskett joining Jodi on lead. Several members are fine songwriters, with their latest wares finely on display with "Try" (Paul Pampinella), "Leave It To Me (Or Leave Me Alone)" (Yumiko again) and "You Know" (Paul Stiller). But as adventurous and fine musicians, they confidently step out of the comfort zone, too. "Kind Of A 3" brings North Indian "tihai" vocal drumming to group a cappella - fascinating and exciting! Five of the group's "live in the studio" improvisations are scattered throughout the CD, opening a window into their creative minds (and yes, you should try this at home!). So welcome back Vox One and encourage them to do more while you savor this reunion gift! (52:57 2005)

"It's wonderful to see the return of Vox One. I had been in contact with Yumiko via email anticipating a new CD and it is finally here. As in the past, the arrangements are difficult, intricate and full of surprises. Dissonances surprise you at every turn. "Simple Gifts" is a fantastic jazz take on the original, that still keeps the old idea but told through a jazz vein. Jodi's emotions are felt through the lead on "You Know" and Paul gives a great pop feel to his lead tune, "Try." Although not a huge fan of the improvs, they are interesting, but I wish there were more actual tunes instead. That's really the only thing lacking. I wanted more, because what they have, as always, is superbly different."
So Glad They're Back At It!

"I first heard Vox One when they opened for The Bobs at the Old Vienna Coffee House in Westborough, MA (no longer there, sadly)... Vox One was amazing then, and I have followed them ever since. I was SO excited to learn of their new/reunion CD, "Pure Imagination." It is wonderful. I hope and pray they do yet another CD, and I only wish they would perform locally -- I would bring so many friends with me!! Thank you for an awesome recording, folks - tight harmony, energy, emotion. Such talent - please don't keep it from us!"
