Wow...Vocalogy are some smooth jazz cats, that's for sure, and they can swing with the best of 'em! Vocalogy arose from an artist-in-residency program under Grammy-Award nominee Phil Mattson. Now self-directed, Vocalogy performs a collection of innovative arrangements written by members of the group.

Opening track "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" grabs you by the collar and makes you sit up and take notice to the intricate harmonies these guys are capable of (not to mention that the swingin' jazz trio accompaniment will get your toes tappin' and fingers snappin'). Female solist Christine Helferich is seriously good (check out soulful gospel number "Time is a Healer"), and with her band of merry men backing her up and taking the stage (check out the scat on a cappella number "Black Orpheus" - crazy, man!), this is a hot sounding group. Manhattan Transfer chops, indeed! These four guys and one woman can make anything sound jazzy, as their bluesy cover of the Beatles' "Oh Darlin'" proves. "Nutville" is reminsicent of the Four Freshmen - tight harmonies laid over a Latin jazz beat - sweet!

We could go on and on about each song, but there's just not enough space - or the words to do them justice - you just have to hear it to fully appreciate this CD. Not all songs are a cappella, in fact, only four out of the 13 songs are unaccompanied (the rest include jazz trio, sax, trumpet and vibraphone accompaniment). But there's some seriously good vocalizing on this album, that should not be missed! (57:57 2005)
