Vox One: Chameleon (CD)

This is possibly the best vocal jazz recording, ever. Vox One wanted to make real jazz, music that would turn the heads of critics more used to instrumental jazz. Their recording features songs that are mostly standards from the jazz world:
Coltranes "Naima," Monks "Round Midnight" and more. The groups perfectionist streak, musical sophistication and enormous talent combine to produce songs that satisfy on many different levels. The title tune and "Teen
Town" feature a wailing half human, half guitar cry thats a new level of fusion between musician and instrument. "Chameleon," nominated for a 1998 CARA along with a nomination for the entire
CD, also includes meter play, found elsewhere on the recording - for example, a "bass" and "drum" polymeter interaction opens "All Blues," and returns for a dueling duet break - wow! "Danny
Boy" provides a break in the jazz standards, with Jodi Jenkins incredible soprano voice infusing a passion in the second verse that sends shivers up and down the spine. The richness of the blend is reminiscent of Singers Unlimited, but
when its time to add that edge, as in "Teen Town" with the amazing bass "guitar" and electric lead
"guitar" solos, Vox One lets it rip. If you like vocal jazz this is an absolutely essential recording! (35:25 1998)

"I keep coming back to this recording. It really has served as an inspiration to my vocal jazz performing as well as what I listen for in other groups. At the time, this album was instrumental in creating a new progressive pop jazz genre among vocal jazz artists that later influenced current groups like m-pact and Cluster. Matsuoka's arrangements are challenging and a real test of intonation. The title track, "Chameleon," will get you hooked with its tight chords, driving vocal percussion and base as well amazing intonation. "Naima" is classy and "Danny Boy" is of course classic. Vox One has a signature sounded that is clearly demonstrated best of this album!"

"Morning by Vox One is an amazing song. Recently my cousin Bianca Vocke was killed in a car accident and she was a part of the Dubuque Senior Color Guard and The Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. The 2007-2008 summer the Colts piece was called Morning with music by Vox one. When Bianca died at the hospital she was surrounded by her family and hearing Morning playing in the background. At her funeral the Dubuque senior guard and the colts stood in two lines in the asiles while they pulled our friend away while listening to her favorite song, Morning. Thanks for making such an impact on my cousin's short but long life."
